Virtually unknown to the world before 2003, the enchanting Gangtey Valley was put on the map of dreamful Asian travel destinations thanks to Khin Omar Win and Brett Melzer, who envisioned the creation of an extraordinary lodging experience in consonance with the highly-regarded Bhutanese hospitality. Years later, Gangtey Lodge was opening its doors and portraying scenic vistas of the Phobjikha glacial valley, from which one can only be distracted by the occasional black-necked crane flying by or gentle interactions with the warm-hearted staff.

The windows of Gangtey Lodge reveal the story of a valley once concealed from the world, its landscapes sculpted over thousands of years into a graceful U-shape by ancient glaciers. Framed by Bhutanese arched designs, the ever-shifting scenery of the Phobjikha Valley stretches below, where a vast wetland thrives as a protected haven for 13 endangered species. Among its most treasured inhabitants are the elegant black-necked cranes, which journey from the Tibetan plateau each year to nest, symbolizing the valley’s profound natural harmony.
These windows also offer a glimpse into a rich spiritual heritage. To the right, the 17th-century Gangtey Goenpa Monastery crowns a lush hilltop, standing as a sentinel of peace and tradition. Below, quiet farming villages rest in its protective shadow, where folklore speaks of roaming spirits and benevolent forces safeguarding the land. Each view through these windows weaves a narrative of nature’s splendor, cultural depth, and an enduring connection to the sacred.
